Towse v. CSEA, Local 1000

CASE SUMMARY

The Fairness Center represents Greg Towse, an office assistant for the State of New York Division of Military and Naval Affairs. Mr. Towse resigned from CSEA in September 2020, providing CSEA with his name, address, and phone number. CSEA rejected his resignation, claiming he had not included “required information.” But CSEA refused to provide Mr. Towse with a copy of anything he had agreed to that would explain what information was required. Ultimately, CSEA forced Mr. Towse to remain a dues-paying member for another half a year, until April 2021. With the help of the Fairness Center, Mr. Towse has brought this federal lawsuit to enforce his constitutional rights not to be associated with or to financially support a union against his will.
